A dominant Letchworth forward pack worked the Ferns hard from the beginning of the match. In the first half, our defensive preparation paid off as they fended off several sustained attacks in our 22 and close to our try line. Our backs were able to capitalise on a couple of opportunities, with Katie and Kayla making breaks from close to our try line and running the full length of the field to score under the posts. The half finished with the Ferns 0-10 up but it was far from a comfortable scoreline at that point and the game felt like it could go either way.
The second half saw the Letchworth pack build the pressure again. The sustained attacks and a series of penalties allowed them to cross the line twice, with a conversation the difference between the two teams with only 10 mins to go.
But Datchworth had more in them. They worked Letchworth back in to their half and after they knocked-on just on their 22, Datchworth managed to get the ball out wide (albeit with some untidy passing) and our speedy full-back Shannon ran around the Letch defence to put the Ferns back in front.
With only a few minutes remaining, Datchworth just needed to avoid making any errors. Unfortunately a knock-on gave Letchworth the ball and shortly after we also conceded a penalty. But a mistake from the Letchworth backs gave us the ball back. After a few phases the Ferns shipped the ball out to the wing for Katie's 2nd try on her senior debut. A great way to finish a close contest.
